The first successful airplane was built and invented by Wilbur and Orville Wright. On December 17, 1903, they made the first flight in a power-driven, heavier-than-air machine near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. On that day, 3 flights were made. The longest was 260 metres in 59 seconds by Wilbur.
